The story takes place in the state of Texas (USA) in 1954. Bernard Garrett (Mackie) is an ambitious businessman who wants to make progress in the real estate business. One of his goals is to buy banks to generate loans for residents of houses that will be rented. Garrett then asks Joe Morris (Jackson), a veteran investor who decides to bet on the project, for help.

Already knowing that they will not get credit in the square for being black, the two use a white man named Matt Steiner (Nicholas Hoult) to pretend to be responsible for the investments. With the initial success of buying banks and houses in white neighborhoods of the city, it doesn’t take long for the FBI to get on the trail of the three to unmask the scheme.
